Welcome Winter Term!

The ladies of Alpha Phi kicked off Winter Term with a weekend full of activities. Saturday morning, the men of Phi Kappa Psi joined us for breakfast, an event that they purchased this past Spring to help raise money during our philanthropy, Alpha Male. It was great seeing our neighbors; they even brought Snowbelle, their St. Bernard! Thanks again to Phi Kappa Psi for the support!

Patty’s positive energy and straightforward advice brought us together as a chapter, and has inspired us to have a kick-butt Winter Term. Thanks again Patty, we all hope to see you again soon!

SUMMER SERIES: KRISTINA PHAM-LOO (’14) SCHOOL, AN INTERNSHIP, AND 3 JOBS!

“These past three months have been busy to say the least! I finished Gateway in less than 3 months, had 3 jobs, and an internship with Seeds of Learning, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving educational opportunities in rural Latin America.

Gateway is the series of classes that any Journalism major has to take and pass to get a journalism degree. It can be hard and definitely time consuming, but a great learning experience at the same time.

While taking summer classes, I managed to juggle a job at the cafe in the Lillis Business Complex on campus, a position as a merchandiser with a jewelry company called Chloe+Isabel, the internship with Seeds of Learning (which consisted of selling authentic braclets that were made in San Ramon, Nicaragua. All proceeds went to Seeds of Learning to build schools in Nicaragua and El Salvador) and an editor position for Special Sections, the biggest section for The Emerald.

Working for The Emerald has been one of my favorite aspects of this past summer. It’s definitely something I want to continue with in the future. My dream job is to be a creative director for Harper’s Bazaar. My tasks at The Emerald consist of thinking of story ideas, assigning stories, thinking of cover stories, and working with photographers and designers to create layout.”

Summer Series: Erin Maloney (’15) Interning with Arizona Sports 620 Radio

“This summer I interned at Arizona Sports 620. Arizona Sports 620 is a radio station in Phoenix, AZ and they broadcast all Arizona sporting events. I helped out with the show Burns and Gambo, and Doug and Wolf during the day, then I headed to games at night to take play-by-play notes. I learned how to make podcasts for the shows, cut highlights, and I had the chance to talk on the air. My favorite part of my internship was definitely going to the games. I got to stand on the sidelines and go into press conferences with players and coaches!”

Listen to one of Erin’s segments here!
